February is the month of love, but to me it also seems to be the month that drags on FOREVER, even though it’s the shortest one all year. This year, we get to add-on one more day, too, since it’s Leap Year. But there are lots of things we can celebrate this month to make special memories with our family. Whether it be things to celebrate all month long or a special holiday just happening one day this month, we are here to help you make sure to have some special family fun. And you can print out this month’s calendar here:

Day-Specific Holidays: |
February 1 - Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day
- Why not surprise your kids with an ice cream buffet when they wake up. Set up an assortment of ice cream toppings and let everyone create their own sundae this morning. Toppings like M&Ms, oreo crumbs, strawberries, blueberries, chocolate chips, pound cake cubes, and mini marshmallows make good toppings, and don’t forget the whipped cream and cherries, too! And if you really want to get crazy, try this recipe to make your own!
- Want to go out instead? A few of our favorites include:
- Bruster's Indian Trail
- The Bridge Creamery
- The Local Scoop
February 2 - “The Big Game” Day
- Whether Football is your favorite sport or you’re just here for the food, there’s a lot of fun to be had today. Check out these crafts, games and recipes:
February 4 - Thank a Mailman Day
- Sometimes we take people for granted, so today is a good day to remember to thank someone who impacts your life almost daily, yet we don’t talk to very often - our mailman (or woman!) While its getting harder with the cluster mailboxes, maybe get a few neighbors together and make a little gift basket for your carrier!
February 7 - Send a card to a Friend Day
- Now that you’ve thanked your mailman, today you’re going to add some mail to that mailbox by sending a friend a card, or maybe you want to hand deliver the card. Whatever you decide, make sure you let your friend (or friends) know how much you appreciate them.
February 8 - Boy Scout Day
- Boy Scouts learn and have fun doing projects and activities that prepare them for life. Looking for a troop near you? Visit their website and enter your zip code for the list: https://www.scouting.org/
February 9 - National Pizza Day
- With Valentine’s Day coming up, why not celebrate National Pizza Day with a special heart shaped pizza? You can make your own pretty easily - whether you pick up dough from your local grocery store or make it from scratch, you can stretch the dough into a heart and add toppings as desired. We have a great collection of cookie cutters, and plan to cut out our provolone and mozzarella cheese into hearts as we lay it out on the pizza. You could even use a mini heart-shaped cutter to form sausage and pepperoni, peppers or tomatoes!
- You can also just skip the mess and order your heart-shaped pizza from locally-owned Papa's Pizza To Go. It's one of our family's favorites!
February 11 - Make a Friend Day
- This may take more than a day, but I want you to really think about something you enjoy, but haven’t done in awhile. Maybe it’s reading, so consider joining a book club offered at many of the libraries in Union County. Perhaps you played sports growing up and miss it. Check out Weddington Swim and Racquet Club for their tennis leagues or head over to open swim at MSA in Indian Trail. For me, I've found my tribe at Burn Bootcamp in Matthews - the women (and men) are encouraging and uplifting and always make me smile. Whatever it is, I encourage you to make a plan to start doing it again. When you start doing something you enjoy, you’ll meet people who have the same interest and maybe you’ll make some new friends in the process, too.
February 13 - National Cheddar Day
- The winter months are perfect for comfort foods. And there is nothing more comforting than a big pot of macaroni and cheese. Here are three recipes that you might want to try!

February 17 - Random Act of Kindness Day
- In September, Macaroni Kid celebrates our own Act of Kindness Day, but this is something that can be celebrated year round. Here are 31 Ways to make a difference!
February 18 - Drink Wine Day
- There's no better way to celebrate the oenophile's favorite holiday than to grab your favorite bottle and head over to Painting with a Twist, Indian Trail. You can sip and paint all night with your pals, your partner or even...dare I say it.... ALONE! Let your creative juices flow while celebrating this mom-approved ADULT holiday!
February 19 - Lashes Day
- This may sound like a silly day. I mean, really, a day to celebrate eye lashes? There really is a day for everything! But recently, I started getting my lashes done and if I told you I was a happier person, would I sound shallow? Maybe, but it's true! I never have to wear makeup anymore and always look *done*. If you're looking for something new to freshen your you, check out one of the amazing lash lounges in our area. Not ready for that? Maybe just have a fun spa day at home with your kiddos! Cut some cucumbers, make a sugar scrub and relax!
February 22 - Walking the Dog Day
- Walking your dog is not just important for your dog, it’s also good for you, too. It provides stress relief, exercise, and maybe even socialization if you run into a neighbor while you’re out. It’s also a good way to make sure you get fresh air, even in the winter. We tend to spend more time indoors when it’s cold outside, but walking your dog is a great benefit to you and your dog all year round.
February 23 - Tennis Day
- You don’t have to be Serena Williams to enjoy tennis. There are many local parks and playgrounds that also have tennis courts, so grab your rackets, a couple of tennis balls, and your family can go play tennis.
February 26 - Tell a Fairy Tale Day
- Once upon a time, a long, long time ago… Give your child that writing prompt and ask them to write their own fairy tale, or talk about it at the dinner table and have each person take turns making up a few lines of the story. Did you have a favorite fairy tale as a child? Visit your local library and see if they have it, or see if you can find one that no one has read before.
February 28 - Floral Design Day
- Stop by the local market or flower shop and pick up some of your favorite stems. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube to create your own arrangements.
February 29 - Leap Day
- Why do we celebrate Leap Year? This YouTube video is great to help kids understand:
