Springing Into Second Semester with Success

By Huntington Learning Center ~ Weddington January 9, 2022

It is time to shake off the holiday sugar and festivities and turn that alarm clock back on…cue the heavy sighs from teachers, I mean parents, I mean students.

The two weeks of break are so needed and looked forward to, then all of the sudden - BAM!, we are back to it, and this year, only 2 days after we rang in 2022.

We go into every new year with great expectations for ourselves, but what about for our children as students. Is it time to boost, reset, or completely rewrite our expectations, especially after the last two years? Whatever your child needs to be successful as a student, no matter the age, grade, or ability level, here are some tips to start the second half of the school year right!

  • Create realistic organizational plans for children and parents
  • Revisit appropriate study habits
    • When does your child study?
    • Keep a consistent space designated for school work.
    • Do not forget study breaks are important.
  • Reinforce the importance of writing assignments down, whether on a to-do list or planned
  • Discuss good routines and/or
  • Create new bedtime and morning routines if the old ones caused any stress
  • Set parameters for phone and social media
  • Be realistic when scheduling extracurricular activities - try not to make a habit of over-scheduling
  • Set goals and make them specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound
  • Schedule regular family time - no matter the age→
    • How many families got new board games for Christmas????
    • Share a cup of hot chocolate
    • As ever so needed, spend time together creating a unique care package for anyone with an illness
    • Choose an organization to support and volunteer as a family

These are all excellent steps, but remember, do not try to take them all at once. We want to decrease stress…

And, if you feel your student needs more assistance, remember Huntington Learning Center is here to help. We are currently enrolling new students at all levels for help in all areas.

Happy New Year!
