Keeping Your Kids' Teeth Healthy Through Summer Shenanigans

By Carolina Kids Dentistry June 14, 2021

Summer means pool trips, camp and popsicles. It means lazy mornings followed by even lazier afternoons. It means travel plans and summer shenanigans that derail schedules and late bedtimes after nights surrounding the fire pit while making s'mores.

Unfortunately, all that could also translate to summer ruining our kids' teeth. Here are some tips to our kids' teeth healthy despite the summer chaos:

  • Keep a schedule to eat meals and snacks (school does a really good job for us )
  • Have a snack drawer in the fridge that kids know they can open and eat any time:
    • cut fruits
    • cut veggies
    • cheese sticks
    • yogurt
  • Keep sugar free options available
    • sugar-free jello
    • sugar-free pudding
    • sugar-free popsicles
  • My kids, although in middle and high school still have a shelf in the pantry w/ go-to snacks:
    • peanut butter
    • 100 cal snacks
    • popcorn
    • nuts
    • eggs
      • generally, foods that higher in protein will keep kids “fuller” longer.  The more they’re bored, the more they think they’re hungry.
  • Drink water over fruit juice/ soda OR flavor water with crystal light
  • Make sure kiddos are wearing the right mouthguard for sports
  • Add in a third tooth-brushing or bring your brush with you while you are on the go. Had some corn at a cookout or at Carowinds? Don't wait until you get home, pop into a restroom and brush those pearly whites right then and there.
  • Keep our phone number handy - if a tooth (that shouldn't) falls out while playing at a splash pad or the pool, you'll want to call us IMMEDIATELY.   You can reach our Mint Hill office at (704) 790-0590 and our Waxhaw office at (980) 339-8720.
