Get Moving ~ Things to Do as a Family Before You Feast!

Great Ways to Burn Energy (and Calories) On Thanksgiving or Anytime!

One thing is for sure - no matter if you are spending your holiday with your immediate family or opening up to a larger group - sitting still all day benefits no one. So, before you feast, spend some time with your family being active and having fun. Not only will it make you feel better, it will also make that food taste THAT MUCH more delicious!

Whenever our family has the time to truly be together, like holidays or vacations, here are a few of the things we like to do most:


  • Shooting Hoops: Whether you play a real game, keep score or just a fun game of HORSE (or TURKEY), get the whole family involved. You'll laugh and burn off some much-needed steam!
  • Taking the dog on a walk with the kids: Can't leave Fido at home when you go for some family fun, so leash him or her up and head out. Let the kids grab their bikes or scooters or just make a leisurely stroll. There are so many great trails and parks for walking, but really - a trip around your neighborhood accomplishes the same thing! 
  • Yoga: Indoors or out, yoga is a great activity for the whole family. When our kids were young, we'd do silly "animal" poses or sing songs (there are so many good ones available online!). Now that the kids are older, we can do a few sun salutations or a full class! We like taking it outside when the weather cooperates - so that we can better connect with nature and feel more zen. 
  • Riding bikes after dinner: We love taking a little ride after we've eaten. It aids in digestion and is just a great time. Since it is getting darker, earlier, please make sure to wear reflective clothing and a headlamp if you can. 
  • Cartwheels (or other gymnastics) in the front yard: Have you ever seen dad do a cartwheel? Mom probably feels pretty awesome about her skills - or maybe it's the opposite! Either way, cartwheels are a gateway to other gymnastics and you'll end up laughing as you tumble and sometimes fall all over the place!
