Many of you know, I have always wanted to be a Hockey Mom. My husband and I both grew up in the Chicago suburbs and both of us grew up on skates. It was never a question - until we moved here and had kids. To be honest, not playing hockey wasn't even an option until the quarantine. And, now because we are taking our "re-entry" slowly, mostly doing outdoor activities (especially sports), we decided to get our youngest signed up for soccer.
There are so many soccer programs in the area and we had tried some in the past, unsuccessfully. But when he heard that he'd be playing with Happy Feet Charlotte this fall, he did a veritable happy dance! This, of course, made me beam.
Now that we are nearly finished with our first season, I can tell you this: NOT ALL SOCCER PROGRAMS ARE CREATED EQUAL! This was the first time in several attempts at soccer that he has been excited each and every practice, asking for more practice and wanting to go out and play soccer with his brother. Part of it may be because the ball has a name - BOB - and part of it may be because each coach-led practice is more like a story-telling adventure. Yes, each week they do learn and build upon skills they were taught, but its all in the context of taking Bob, the ball, on an adventure.
Happy Feet Charlotte is opening up a late fall league that will start the week of October 17th and we will definitely be signing up. There are several locations throughout Charlotte, though the one(s) closest to us in Union County are at the Matthews Sportplex and Elon Park. You can learn more about league play HERE.
Not only is the class great, but our coach is fantastic - all of them are! While the children are not required to wear face coverings, some do, and the coaches do. The kids are spread out as much as possible on the field and parents are asked to physically distance from one another and mask-up. Check out our Facebook Live with HappyFeet Charlotte and get a sense of the program and then we'll see you on the field!
