Snack Smarter to Keep Cavities Away

By Carolina Kids Dentistry August 24, 2020

It's 10:30 a.m. and your kids have been working remotely on their schoolwork since 8:30 when you hear, "Mom, I'm hungry." And, while it may be tempting to yell, "fix yourself a snack" the truth is that we know our kids will probably not choose wisely.

Since the start of remote learning last Spring, we've seen more and more patients with cavities when previously, they've had very healthy teeth. The probable culprit: SNACKS!

Yep, those snacks are sneaky and while we think that things like apple juice or raisins are healthy (they are!), without careful brushing and moderation, they can be as damaging to your teeth as candy.

Here are our top 10 snack options for the remote school year!

  1. Nuts
  2. Cheese
  3. Fresh veggies
  4. Popcorn (but make sure to brush well after!)
  5. Dark chocolate
  6. Apple
  7. Milk
  8. Sugarless chewing gum
  9. Sugarless candy
  10. Plain yogurt

Each of the items above have low or no potential for tooth decay. However, snacks like cookies, graham crackers, dried fruits, sugared cereals and sodas are HIGH on the decay potential meter! And while we know your kids might want to enjoy a bowl of ice cream or some potato chips and pretzels throughout the day, make sure they are brushing, flossing and rinsing well after their snacks and - when possible - steer them towards the list above!
