Through a Child's Eye: Charlotte's Black Lives Matter Street Mural

By Olivia ~ 9 Years Old, Weddington June 13, 2020

Editor's Note: My friend, and mother of 4 biracial children, took her kids to see the Black Lives Matter street mural on Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte. In talking with her, I asked if her daughter might want to share with me (and by me, I mean YOU), her experience. I am sharing this with you, unedited, so that you can understand her experience and hear her voice. Olivia is a 9 year old Weddington resident and one awesome kiddo, in my opinion!

My experience in Uptown was amazing. There was lots of different people with signs saying BLACK LIVES MATTER! I felt a combination of emotions: happy, curious, tired and confused. I stopped to think "will there be protesting and police?" I saw police adding hearts to a mural.

With all the people there and me with my mask on, I felt like "I can't breathe." It made me think about George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the others that have died because of the color of their skin. But I was too interested in the colorful, most beautiful, handmade murals to worry about it.

I think all families should go to see the murals and understand that like Tryon street says, "Black Lives Matter."
